Pregnancy Q&A

What pregnancy services are available?

Dr. Patel at Atlantic OB/GYN Associates, PC offers comprehensive care for expectant mothers and their growing babies. You can expect the highest quality of pregnancy care and services, such as:

  • Prenatal care and testing
  • Routine ultrasounds
  • High-risk pregnancy care
  • Lactation consultations

You can receive genetic family counseling services if your baby is at high risk for certain genetic abnormalities or health conditions.

Dr. Patel also provides comprehensive labor and delivery services, and they work with area hospitals offering level 3 newborn intensive care units (NICUs) that provide specialized care for both premature babies and full-term newborns with medical issues.

What can I expect during my initial pregnancy consultation?

If you’re ready to start a family, Dr. Patel can provide prenatal counseling and services to prepare your body for a healthy pregnancy. She also provides in-office blood draws to confirm a pregnancy.

You should schedule your initial pregnancy consultation as soon as you suspect or know you’re pregnant to ensure you receive the proper care as early as possible. In addition to a comprehensive review of your personal and family medical history, Dr. Patel performs a pelvic exam and may request blood work to ensure you’re healthy.

You can expect routine follow-up appointments every month and then increasing to every 1-2 weeks as you get closer to your due date. Through physical exams, and ultrasounds when needed, Dr. Patel monitors your overall health and the growth and development of your baby as you progress through your pregnancy.

What if my pregnancy is high risk?

Any pregnancy that has increased health risks for the mother or baby may be considered high risk. Some of the most common factors that cause you to have a high-risk pregnancy include:

  • Being under 17 or over 35
  • Being underweight or overweight
  • Having an existing chronic disease
  • Experiencing complications in a previous pregnancy

If you smoke or take illegal drugs, your pregnancy may also be considered high risk.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you may need more frequent visits for health monitoring. Dr. Patel also provides specialized services, like genetic family counseling and antenatal testing that can identify abnormalities while your baby is still in utero.

Dr. Patel also offers high-risk services to ensure a safe labor and delivery.
